How long has SEO been used? How has it changed in its life cycle so far?

The Birth of SEO…

  • While modern SEO revolves around Google, SEO itself predates Google. Its earliest form was conceived in 1991 when the first website was launched online. This website ://info.cern.ch is related to the World Wide Web Project and describes what the World Wide Web is and how to use it.
  • In 1994, two Stanford University students created Yahoo as an Internet bookmarking list of interesting sites. The idea behind this massive search engine is to find the best websites approved by human editors. This is important for someone with a high-quality website but few online visitors. Webmasters manually submit their pages for indexing.

In the same year, Lycos, Excite and AltaVista also launched one after another.

  • SEO itself really started in 1996 with the creation of BackRub, the largest and most recognized search engine at the time. This search engine, also created by students at Stanford University, was registered as a domain (which eventually became Google) in 1997. In its infancy, it ranked websites based on popularity and relevance of inbound links.

HotBot was launched that same year.

How SEO Evolved in the 1990s…

  • In 1997, the concept of ranking well on search engines was still new and category-driven. Launched Search Engine Watch, dedicated to providing web search tips, online search industry news, and website ranking tips.

Google.com was registered in 1997, at the same time as Ask Jeeves was launched.

  • In 1998, MSN Search and DMOZ (the Mozilla Open Directory project) were launched. This is known as the “Yellow Pages” of websites and is the most sought-after site for business marketers.
  • Search Engine Strategies was the first search marketing conference held in 1999, and it continued in some form until 2016.
  • In the late 90s, search engines were either human-operated directories or crawler-based, including Yahoo, AltaVista, Infoseek, Excite, Lycos, and Ask Jeeves. SEO practices include a website having adequate text, quality and relevant content, accurate HTML tags, and outbound and internal linking. These factors are relevant today, if not more important.

What’s different, however, is how keywords are used – spam is commonplace, as is extreme keyword stuffing and even hacking.

The Google Revolution of 2000

  • Yahoo partnered with Google in 2000—an incredible strategic move that saw Google power organic search results. Before then, Google was virtually unknown — but it quickly became a household name.

Google revolutionized search engine optimization—for example, its page ranking algorithm and web crawler optimized information retrieval, and it also considered on-page and off-page ranking factors, such as anchor text and external links.

  • The Google Toolbar became available on Internet Explorer in 2000, and search engine optimization provider Their PageRank score can be determined. From 2000 to 2010, SEO began prioritizing link building—seeking to get as many links as possible, so much so that linking was a tactic abused by countless unsolicited link requests sent via email.
  • 2000 also saw the birth of AdWords, the placement of paid search ads on organic (non-paid) search engine results pages.

Google Algorithm Game…

  • Google updates its index frequently. This resulted in significant ranking fluctuations. SEO has become something that cannot be “set and done”; it requires constant focus to stay on top. These algorithm updates are designed to reward content that is high quality, dynamic and relevant to their audience.
  • In 2003, Google launched AdSense, which placed targeted Google ads on publisher sites. This has led to a blogging revolution and the monetization of often poor quality content, especially when it comes to SEO. It leads to creating and publishing spam and websites with low quality, duplicate, stolen content.

Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools launched in 2006 – these are still very important and valuable tools. XML sitemaps, also introduced in 2006, can crawl landing pages across a site for ranking purposes.

  • That same year saw the first major update to Google’s algorithm: “Florida.” It was a headache for many, many websites just before the Christmas shopping period, and it had a lot of bugs.

Other major Google algorithm updates over the years include:

2004 TrustRank – Filtering spam and black hat techniques.

2010 Google Caffeine – Prioritize content updates and improve article indexing.

2011 Google Panda – Prefer sites with higher quality content.

2011 Google Freshness – Prioritizing fresh, dynamic content.

2012 – Google Penguin – against spam.

2013 – Google Hummingbird – Prioritizing natural language in search queries.

2015 – Google Mobilegeddon – Improving mobile-optimized websites.

2015 – Google Rankbrain – clarifies unstructured data in search queries and supports local search terms.

2016 – Google Possum – Customized local search results.

2017 – Google Fred – Penalizes black hat tactics, ad-filled and low-quality sites.

2018 – Google Medic – Prioritizes sites with legitimate medical authority for health-based searches.

2019 – Google BERT – Prioritizing long-form keywords and search intent.

There have been several core updates over the past few years – including (but not limited to) feature fragment deduplication, known victim protection, page experience, product reviews, spam, useful content, and link spam.

The latest Google algorithm update started rolling out in March 2023.
